Adams-Columbia Electric Cooperative Holds 21st Annual Meeting
Friendship - April 24, 2008 - More than 400 members and special guests gathered at the Montello High School on April 12 for the 21st annual meeting of Adams-Columbia Electric Cooperative. Prior to the business meeting, members were treated to a photo show to debut the cooperative's history book, Power in Many Hands. Books were available for purchase and names were drawn to present 25 books to members in attendance.
The business meeting was called to order by Board Chairman Kendal Nichols. Board member Gene Alexander was called upon to give the invocation. Members were asked to consider approving a slate of proposed changes to the Cooperative's bylaws. The bylaws changes were approved on a voice vote. In their annual report, Chief Executive Officer Marty Hillert and Chairman Nichols commented on timely issues facing the cooperative and the electric utility industry. They concluded their report by answering questions from the audience.
Registered members were asked to vote for director candidates in each of four districts. Re-elected for three-year terms were incumbent directors Walter Petersen, Jr, Waupaca; Kendal Nichols, Wisconsin Dells; Scott Link, Cambria; and Alan Kelsey, Waterloo.
In a special election, four candidates competed to fill an unexpired term in District 5. With election results extremely close, Gary Miller, Adams, was the announced winner. Following the annual meeting, one candidate from District 5 requested a ballot recount which was completed on Friday, April 18. The result of the recount and subsequent checks was a tie vote between Miller and Marj Colby, Grand Marsh. With the recount process completed, the two candidates agreed a coin toss would determine the election outcome. As a result of the coin toss, Colby was declared the election winner. She will be the District 5 representative for the two-year balance of the term.
Board officers elected at a reorganizational meeting following adjournment of the annual meeting were: Kendal Nichols, Wisconsin Dells, chairman; Gene Alexander, Nekoosa, vice-chairman; Lawrence Becker, Montello, secretary; and Carolyn Moon, Baraboo, treasurer.
More than $1,600 in prizes was awarded to members in attendance. The grand prize: three months free electricity, up to $350 was awarded to Richard Capelle, Wild Rose. Prior to the meeting a pancake breakfast was served by The Pancake Brothers, with the assistance of several ACEC employees and volunteers from the Community Learning Center of Montello.
