GE GeoSpring 50-gallon Hybrid Water Heaters
The GeoSpring 50-gallon hybrid water heater from General Electric can typically pay for itself in 3 years. A compressor and evaporator are integrated into the unit to draw ambient heat from surrounding air using two variable speed fans. Coils wrap the tank all the way to the bottom to transfer this heat into the tank and heat the water.
With an impressive energy factor of 2.35 in hybrid mode — which exceeds ENERGY STAR® standards — it only costs $198 per year to operate. Compare that to $520 per year one can expect to pay with a standard electric water heater, and the 50-gallon GeoSpring saves the average household $320 every year on electric bills. This means that over a 10-year period, these savings can add up to $3,200 per average household.

About Load Management
Under load management, a receiver control switches off electricity to the water heater during times of high system demand. Mounted near the water heater, the load management receiver is installed by ACEC technicians.
Since the load management program monitors electric load on the entire system, the goal is to reduce electric consumption only during peak usage times. Weather is a big factor in load management programs, so water heaters are not usually controlled every day.
Control periods are only Monday—Friday (and exclude holidays). Power to your electric water heater is never shut off for more than three continuous hours per control cycle. (Should multiple control cycles be required, it would be 1/2 hour on and 1/2 hour off.) In most cases, hot water reserves are adequate to meet family needs during control periods.
